Twenty year-old Cuban-American pianist Antonio Madruga is a Florida native, and is a graduate of the New World School of the Arts in Miami. Currently a full scholarship student at the Manhattan School of Music, he was elected as a freshman to the elite fellowship of the Manhattan Jazz Institute. In September 2013 he was featured in Wynton Marsalis' YoungArts Master Class at the Museum of Modern Art, televised on HBO.
He has performed as a member of the Monk Combo, and with both the Monk All-Star Sextet and Jazz Ensemble. Antonio was recently awarded, for the second consecutive year, by Wynton Marsalis, the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award for outstanding soloist at the 2012 “Essentially Ellington” competition at Lincoln Center. He has been a member of the Grammy Jazz Ensemble, and performed with Grammy-Award winner Esperanza Spalding, during Grammy Week 2011 and with Terri Lynn-Carrington in 2012.
He is a five-time recipient of Downbeat Magazine’s Awards in both classical and jazz piano. His earlier accomplishments include performances at festivals on three continents, as well as being featured in HBO’s Documentary, “The Music in Me,” and Jazziz Magazine. In 2010, he was invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to perform at the White House. He has also appeared as soloist, or with his trio, at Sweet Rhythm’s (NYC), the Panama Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, The 92nd Street Y, Princeton niversity, The Kennedy Center, the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, Tanglewood, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
He also has been a special guest performer for Paquito D’Rivera, Marian McPartland, Danilo Perez, Ira Sullivan, and Bill Charlap. He has toured with Antonio Hart, Bobby Watson, and with Lisa Henry as part of the “Peer to Peer” Thelonious Monk Institute Program. Mrs. Obama also requested for Antonio to be a featured guest in her photo shoot in Harper’s Bazaar Magazine article entitled, “America’s Got Talent.” Antonio has been a recipient of scholarships from the Brubeck Institute, Berklee School of Music, and the Vail Jazz Program. He is a Silver medalist recipient of YoungArts Organization. He recently toured with Bobby Watson and the Thelonious Monk Combo in Santa Fe New Mexico and Thelonious Monk All-Star Septet with Christian McBride in Philadelphia.
